Its secluded position made it an ideal hiding place for Otto Frank, his wife Edith, two daughters, Margot and Anne, of whom Anne was the younger, and four other Jews seeking refuge from Nazi persecution. Though the total amount of floor space in the inhabited rooms came to only about 450 square feet (42 m2), Anne Frank wrote in her diary that it was relatively luxurious compared to other hiding places they had heard about. They remained hidden here for two years and one month until they were raided by the Nazi authorities, arrested, and deported to their deaths in concentration and death camps.

The Annex is located in Amsterdam which is now open to the public. Moreover, It is now a biographical museum and a writer’s house dedicated to Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank. I expected to do and see a lot of things while in Amsterdam, one of them being visiting the Anne Frank House and museum. The museum features exhibitions but more importantly walks you through the Secret Annex where Anne Frank, her family and others hid from the Nazis during the occupation in WWII.
The house is located on the Prinsengracht canal in the centre of Amsterdam. The former hiding place of Anne Frank attracted a huge amount of interest, especially as translations and dramatisations of the Diary had made her a figure known throughout the world. Over the years, the building has had to be renovated to manage such a large number of visitors, and it closed temporarily for this reason in 1970 and 1999.

Of the sizeable Jewish community, the majority, about 75,000 Jews, did not survive the German occupation. Anne Frank went into hiding in the city and wrote her world-famous diary there. The Hunger Winter also took a heavy toll on the city, as it did throughout the Western Netherlands.
There are some exceptions to these hours, usually in connection with national holidays or events in the city. The tour of the house takes about an hour and entry to the museum is permitted up to half an hour before closing time. Each visitor undertakes an audio tour which provides historical and chronological context as one moves through the rooms.
The entrance to the Secret Annex was hidden behind a revolving cupboard that was specially made for this purpose. The office staff helped the people in hiding with food and brought 'news from outside'. On August 4, 1944, the hiding place was betrayed and the people in hiding were deported to various concentration camps.
